Constructing Category Hierarchies for Visual Recognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Class hierarchies are commonly used to reduce the complexity of the classification problem. This is crucial when dealing with a large number of categories. In this work, we evaluate class hierarchies currently constructed for visual recognition. We show that top-down as well as bottom-up approaches, which are commonly used to automatically construct hierarchies, incorporate assumptions about the separability of classes. Those assumptions do not hold for visual recognition of a large number of object categories. We therefore propose a modification which is appropriate for most top-down approaches. It allows to construct class hierarchies that postpone decisions in the presence of uncertainty and thus provide higher recognition accuracy. We also compare our method to a one-against-all approach and show how to control the speed-foraccuracy trade-off with our method. For the experimental evaluation, we use the Caltech-256 visual object classes dataset and compare to stateof-the-art methods.

Building and Leveraging Category Hierarchies for Large-scale Image Classification
In image classification, visual separability between different object categories is highly uneven, and some categories are more difficult to distinguish than others. Such difficult categories demand more dedicated classifiers. However, existing deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) are trained as flat N-way classifiers, and few efforts have been made to leverage the hierarchical structure of...
متن کاملConstructing Coherent Event Hierarchies from News Stories
News describe real-world events of varying granularity, and recognition of internal structure of events is important for automated reasoning over events. We propose an approach for constructing coherent event hierarchies from news by enforcing document-level coherence over pairwise decisions of spatiotemporal containment. Evaluation on a news corpus annotated with event hierarchies shows that e...
متن کاملA Comparison of Features in Parts-Based Object Recognition Hierarchies
Parts-based recognition has been suggested for generalizing from few training views in categorization scenarios. In this paper we present the results of a comparative investigation of different feature types with regard to their suitability for category discrimination. So patches of gray-scale images were compared with SIFT descriptors and patches from the high-level output of a feedforward hie...
متن کاملHierarchies, similarity, and interactivity in object recognition: "category-specific" neuropsychological deficits.
Category-specific impairments of object recognition and naming are among the most intriguing disorders in neuropsychology, affecting the retrieval of knowledge about either living or nonliving things. They can give us insight into the nature of our representations of objects: Have we evolved different neural systems for recognizing different categories of object? What kinds of knowledge are imp...
متن کاملVisual Classification by a Hierarchy of Extended Fragments
The chapter describes visual classification by a hierarchy of semantic fragments. In fragment-based classification, objects within a class are represented by common sub-structures selected during training. The chapter describes two extensions to the basic fragment-based scheme. The first extension is the extraction and use of feature hierarchies. We describe a method that automatically construc...
